About the SMSF Coach service

SMSF advice in plain English (sometimes with an Irish accent)

We see it all the time. People know they should do something about their super, then freeze because of the jargon and the paperwork. Our job is to get you moving again.

We cut through the red tape and walk you through each step, explaining it in plain English as we go. Some of us do that with an Irish accent, so feel free to ask us to say it again.

This blog shows you the strategies and structures that can help you fund a self-funded retirement. When you’re ready to talk about your own situation, book a 15-minute call.

Meet the SMSF Coaches

Liam Shorte, Director, financial planner and SMSF Specialist Advisor™

Liam is the person known as The SMSF Coach. He’s a Director of Sonas Wealth, a financial planner and an SMSF Specialist Advisor™, and he’s a sought-after speaker for SMSF trustees. He has won numerous SMSF industry awards over the years.

Damian Hearn, financial adviser and SMSF Specialist Advisor™

If your situation is complex, Damian is the person to see. He leads our New Business & Coaching Team, and his technical background covers SMSFs, retirement, family trusts, estate planning and passing wealth to the next generation.

Damian was previously with Satori Advisory. Before that he held senior technical roles at IOOF (as National Technical Services Manager), Chan & Naylor, Perpetual Private Clients, Asgard Wealth Solutions and Colonial First State. After years of training advisers, he decided to become a financial planner himself.

Cameron Holdsworth, Financial Planner, SMSF Specialist Adviser and Aged Care Accredited

Cameron advises clients of all ages and leads our aged care advice. He’s also accredited as an SMSF specialist. He spent 16 years as an electrician before going back to university to become a financial planner. He excelled in his exams, then survived 12 months shadowing Liam during his Professional Year.

Local, and Australia-wide

With our support team, we run Sonas Wealth from offices in Windsor and Castle Hill. We look after people across the Hills District and the Hawkesbury who want to take back control of their finances and plan for the short, medium and long term. We also meet clients in the Sydney CBD, and online by Teams or Zoom anywhere in Australia.

An SMSF isn’t for everyone

This blog focuses on SMSFs, but we won’t push you into one. We look at your needs and objectives before we recommend anything. If an SMSF isn’t right for you, or you’re not comfortable running one, we’ll tell you and recommend another option.

Australia’s super system gives you plenty of choice:

  • There’s a wide range of funds and platforms to choose from.
  • You can generally change funds or investment options as your life changes. Switching can have costs, tax and insurance consequences, so check before you move.
  • Depending on the fund, you can invest anywhere from conservative (such as cash) to growth (such as shares and property), to suit your comfort with risk and your goals.
  • You choose how hands-on to be. An SMSF gives you the most control, and the most responsibility: as a trustee you stay legally responsible for the fund, even when you outsource the admin.

For accountants, lawyers and other professionals

Other professionals come to us for SMSF help and guidance. If you’d like to talk through an SMSF question or refer a client, book a call or ring either office.

Take the first step

Think it’s all too hard, or embarrassed about past money decisions? Don’t be. The past is the past, and we’re far more interested in making the most of your options from here.
